Reading
Students use the Scott Foresman reading series, Reading Street as the core reading curriculum. Some teachers use the Reading Street intervention program called My Sidewalks for students who are not working on grade level in reading. SRA Reading Mastery and SRA Corrective Reading are also used with some students who are not reading on grade level. In addition, our teachers use phonics texts by SRA, Harcourt Brace, the Lindamood Bell Phonemic Awareness Program, Sadlier Phonics, or Modern Curriculum Press Phonics to supplement the reading series. All students in grades one through five get reading instruction in the NCS Successmaker computer lab. This is a customized computer program based on a student's progress. The Accelerated Reader program is used to enrich our reading program and to foster a love of reading in our students. Teachers in grades three through five use the series, Wordly Wise, to improve their students' vocabulary. Our teachers use numerous materials to help prepare their students for FCAT (Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test) which is given each year in April. Kindergarten teachers use the Waterford Early Reading Program - a customized computer program for each student based on his/her progress. This program enhances the existing kindergarten curriculum.
Math
All students in grades K through 5 use the Go Math! series published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. These texts provide students with strategies to connect math to real life situations and build confidence in problem solving. Students receive additional math instruction in the computer labs. Our teachers use numerous materials to help prepare their students to take the FCAT mathematics test each year in April.
Writing
LaBelle Elementary School teachers have developed a writing portfolio which lists the writing skills to be mastered at each grade level. The portfolio follows the student to the next grade so that each student's progress is monitored. Sanron Writing, Write Traits, Melissa Forney writing strategies, and other writing materials provide a continuum of writing skills from kindergarten through fifth grade.
Spelling
Teachers use Wordly Wise, and the spelling materials from the Reading Street reading series. Our third, fourth, and fifth grade students participate in the annual spelling bee. The winner of the school spelling bee participates in the annual Hendry County Spelling Bee.
Science/Social Studies
Kindergarten teachers integrate science skills with their language arts and mathematics curriculum.
